We know — "root canal" are two words nobody wants to hear. But here's the thing: by the time you need one, you're usually already in enough pain that the procedure itself is a relief. Most patients are genuinely surprised by how manageable it is.

A root canal becomes necessary when the pulp inside a tooth gets infected or inflamed — from deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work on the same tooth. Left untreated, the infection spreads and the tooth typically can't be saved. The procedure removes the damaged tissue, cleans out the space, and seals it so the infection can't come back.
